Bali to Komodo and Flores Sailing Adventure Trip

Set sail to seas holding a wealth of treasures and secrets, just waiting to be discovered. Isolated island cultures, almost untouched by the passing of time offer a glimpse of an unique and fascinating world while providing ample opportunities to collect artifacts and handicrafts unavailable elsewhere in the world.

We offer extended eight-day voyages of discovery from November through April Bali to Komodo Island to Flores or southeast via Sumba and Sawu to Flores.

Each of the islands you will visit has its own special sights. The great stone-slab tombs and indigenous villages of Sumba, the animistic beliefs on Sawu, the intricate ikat weaving of Sumba and Flores, the brilliantly colored lakes of Kelimutu in Flores, and the huge monitor dragons of Komodo rate as some of the finest attractions in South East Asia!

Journeys along the Lesser Sunda Islands remain among our favorite itineraries and for good reason. Few areas in Asia can lay claim to such cultural and natural diversity: towering active volcanoes, jungle-clad mountain ranges, and dry savannah, teeming with wildlife, quiet coastal villages, emerald seas, megalithic cultures, colorful market places, tribal rituals and architecture, not to mention a world of kaleidoscopic beauty under water.

This cruise will cover twice the Komodo area for snorkeling, beach combing and hiking through one of the most beautiful National Parks of Indonesia.

The Flores Highlands will be an opportunity to hike to some remote villages and witness the long-winding process of ikat weaving, practiced amid unsurpassed scenery of gigantic volcanoes, bamboo forests and intriguingly coloured crater lakes.

Flores-Komodo-South Sulawesi Sailing Cruises Travel Guides

SAILING EXPEDITION SOUTH SULAWESI-KOMODO-FLORES WITH RATU RIMA

If your plans call for a visit to Sulawesi and Komodo and you want to get off the beaten track, book this special cruise program now! The 70 ft./24 meter traditional Pinisi Schooner "Rima" will carry you from Sulawesi or Komodo to the unspoiled island of Selayar and Indonesia's largest coral atoll of Takabonerate. This special program departs Makassar/Bira, South Sulawesi and Labuhan Bajo, on the island of Flores, weekly with these special departures. If you check air and ship schedules you will find this program is your best connection to or from Komodo and Sulawesi.

In the months of October-April, the prevailing winds switch to coming from the west, and this makes it possible to dive the east coast of Selayar Island. This 75km long island boasts some of the best wall dives and isolated beaches in Indonesia. The comfortable evening departure from Bira, South Sulawesi brings us to our first dive after our overnight sail south.

Once you have made the commitment to visiting the Komodo National Park, you will find that either you re-track your steps back to Bali or continue over the island of Flores to Maumere, from where you can fly "Back to Bali".

On the other hand, if you plan on traveling North to the Island of Sulawesi, your choices are quite limited but one of them is to travel via our Traditional Schooner KLM Rima. Our program takes 3 nights and 4 days and visit many of the outer islands for Tanah Jampea, Selayar, Kayuadi and arrive at the harbor of Bira, South Sulawesi where we transfer to the city of Makassar.

Divers can make approximately 3-4 dives over the duration of the trip, but the key objective of this program is transport and a comfortable sailing and beach combing adventure.

Sailing Itinerary:

Day 01 Labuhan Bajo - Sea time 30 hours
Today your sea adventure starts aboard "Ratu Rima",
under the massive sails of a true traditional sailing phinisi Schooner. Travel time varies with wind conditions, but estimated sailing time to our first destination, Takabonerate Atoll, is 30 hours. Your accommodations aboard Ratu Rima are very comfortable, wide berthed dorm style accommodations. Meals are prepared aboard the vessel and are included in the cost of this special cruise program. (One lunch, one dinner)

Day 02 Takabonerate - Selayer
Takabonerate is the second largest coral atoll in the world. This massive collapsed volcano supports one of the world's finest coral reef systems and is the breeding ground for many species of sea turtles. Time is allocated for an afternoon stop, for snorkeling or diving. After the evening meal, Ratu Rima will set sail for an overnight cruise to Selayar Island. Estimated sailing time on this sector is 10 hours. (Note: Crew retains the option to overnight in Takabonerate or Selayar based on weather and passenger interests.) (One breakfast, one lunch, one dinner)

Day 03 Selayar
This morning Ratu Rima will arrive off the island of Selayar. Time is taken for some island exploration, snorkeling and dives can be made. (One breakfast, one lunch, one dinner)

Day 04 Selayar - Bira (Tanah Beru)
This morning Ratu Rima will depart Selayar Island for Bira South Sulawesi. Mid-day arrival will allow time to settle in at the Anda Bungalows or make a quick connection to Makassar. (One breakfast, one lunch)

East Indonesia Sailing Trip

FLORES - BANDA - KEI

Although Indonesia encompasses 18.000 odd islands, presenting a truly stunning variety of cultures, flora, fauna and marine biology, marine tourism is virtually non-existent.

Indonesia boasts the largest wooden fleet still in operation: the Bugis Schooners or Phinisi.

Flat bottomed Phinisi need little maritime infrastructure and are built to approach even the smallest islets at close range.

During this cruise from ‘Asia to the Pacific’ you will greatly enjoy these benefits while sailing along a string of islands stretched out along the Ring of Fire.

Highlight on this cruise will definitely be the Banda islands, 9 tiny islands strewn in the middle of the ocean, but for centuries the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, when it was the world centre of nutmeg en mace cultivation, the weight of which was measured against gold bars.

KEI - AGATS - TIMIKA

During this journey of a lifetime you will be perplexed by the astonishing ingenuity and seemingly unlimited creativity in how humans survive, socialize and rejoice. A world where time is of no essence and attention for daily worries and pleasure is paramount.

Nature will reveal itself in its most breathtaking form in the Triton bay crowded with extraterrestrial formations and the Kiti Kiti waterfall thundering from steep cliffs straight down into the sea.

Cultural highlight will be the display of Papua culture by the Asmat, where hundreds of warriors brandishing spears and shrieking in ecstasy will surround the Katharina to dispel the demons we carried from overseas.

Experience how wonder and relaxation can change your life in a world without CNN, traffic jams and computer-screens.

KEI - SOUTHEAST MALUKU - TIMOR

The southeastern Maluku (Moluccas) Islands belong to the most remote parts of the Indonesia Archipelago. Located way beyond Bali, the hundred-odd islands of this Archipelago lie spread across the vast expanses of the South Banda Sea, the deepest of all Indonesian seas, with an abyss of over 7,000 meters.

This voyage across the South Banda Sea will call at some of the most beautiful of these islands, some volcanic and dressed in luxuriant vegetation, others coral atolls, more dry and barren, and lined with swaying palms. This archipelago, however remote it may be, is an enchanting place for the adventurous traveler: there are towering volcanoes to climb, tribal populations with a rich cultural heritage to encounter, uninhabited islands set in deep blue seas, kaleidoscopic coral reefs never visited before, and great scenery that will change every morning, as you come on deck after a night’s sleep on the “Katharina”.

TIMOR - SAVU - SUMBA - BALI

The ethereal tones of the sasando, a 12-string lontar-leaf harp, evoking the nostalgia of the Portuguese era on the island of Roti.

The beach of Sawu under the gracious feet of virgins dancing at a thanksgiving ceremony following harvest;

The earth of Sumba being trampled by horses carrying ferocious warriors.

This, plus a sure meeting with Jurassaic monsters in Komodo National Park, is the kind of experience this cruise to Indonesia prior to monotheism is made of.

On board our traditional Phinisi, Katharina, where your sundowner will be served while you gaze in total relaxation at the Sea around you.
